Commonly found in the toolboxes of contractors and handymen alike, the grinder tool has many different uses in construction and industrial settings today. Most modern grinders draw their power from an electrical source, but some utilize battery power. Not all these tools are the same, however, and there are at least four different types that are typically seen in today's workforce.
The angle grinder is sometimes referred to as a disc or side. A compact, handheld device, the angle product usually sees the most use in today's construction and metalworking trades. Occasionally, emergency responders will employ angle grinders to aide in rescue or other emergency situations.
Stationary grinders, the bench one sits on top of a workbench or tabletop when in use. The rotating wheels of a bench product have an abrasive finish, perfect for metal shaping, grinding, or sharpening. Settings that work with larger materials may even use a pedestal one, which is typically bolted to a floor or some other solid surface.
The wet product is amongst the least common types of grinders used today. Historically, wet grinders have been used in the preparation of food, specifically lentil or cereal. While they are still used in food prep, the term usually refers to a heavy-duty power tool that is used primarily for the cutting or polishing of stone, brick, or tile.
There are other factors to consider when shopping for grinders, too. The unit's RPMs, arbor size, and power source are also important to picking the right tools. Although most of today's grinders use electricity to function, pneumatic grinders actually use pressurized gas to power the unit. The result is tools that are both efficient and precise.
Most grinders also let you change or replace the grinding wheel or disc. This is ideal when a wheel begins to dull over time, or when a specialty type of wheel is called for. Typically measured in inches or millimeters, common wheel sizes can be anywhere from four to 12 inches in diameter. Different wheels are also used for cutting different materials, such as diamond-infused wheels that are meant for cutting hard materials.
A reliable grinder tool can be the centerpiece of any handyman's toolbox. When used correctly, a high quality product can make easy work of many different projects. Understanding the differences between them is key to finding the right one for you, and a great deal of consideration should be given before purchasing one.
